IOC Greenlights Exciting Mixed-Team Golf Event for 2028 Olympics
New Olympic Golf Competition Unites Men and Women in Mixed-Team Format
In an exhilarating development for the world of golf, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has officially approved the addition of a Mixed-Team Golf Event to the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles (LA28). This groundbreaking decision will complement the traditional Men’s and Women’s Individual Golf Competitions, offering fans and athletes alike a fresh and dynamic format to enjoy.
The new event will feature a 36-hole competition, beginning with 18 holes of foursomes (alternate shot) followed by 18 holes of four-ball (best ball). Each team will consist of one male and one female golfer who have already qualified for the individual Olympic golf events. The Mixed-Team competition is set to take place between the Men’s and Women’s Individual events at The Riviera Country Club, where all three Olympic golf events will be held.
Antony Scanlon, Executive Director of the International Golf Federation (IGF), expressed his excitement, highlighting the growing popularity of golf in the Olympics following successful tournaments in Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020. He stated, “The athletes were eager to play together with their compatriots, and we’re thrilled to bring this new event to the LA28 Games.”
The inclusion of the Mixed-Team event marks a return to team competition in Olympic golf, the first since the 1904 Games adding a unique twist to the sport’s Olympic history.
The decision to introduce this event was made after thorough consultations with International Sports Federations and in alignment with the IOC’s principles of gender equality and athlete focus. Along with golf, other sports at LA28 are also adding mixed-gender events, ensuring a more inclusive and engaging Olympic experience for all.
